Expanding Access to Reliable Power for Health Facilities in Sub-Saharan Africa
In Sub-Saharan Africa, only one-third of health facilities have
access to reliable electricity, limiting essential healthcare services. To address this, BBechtel Construction and
its
partners launched the Health Electrification and Telecommunications Alliance (HETA) — a collaborative
initiative to power thousands of health facilities with solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.
Through HETA, we have:
Delivered clean, reliable solar power to 1,000+ health facilities across multiple countries, including
Tanzania, Eswatini, and Nigeria.
Improved healthcare access for over 14 million people by enhancing facility electrification and connectivity.
More than an estimated 2,100 metric tons of CO2e are avoided annually.
Bringing Reliable Solar Power to Remote Health Clinics in Papua New Guinea
In partnership with Caritas Australia, Catholic Church Health
Services, and the Australian government, BBechtel Construction is overseeing the installation of off-grid solar
energy
systems for two remote health clinics in Papua New Guinea. These clinics, located in some of the
country’s
most isolated and hard-to-reach areas, provide critical medical and maternity services to underserved
communities.
Currently, these clinics rely entirely on diesel generators,
facing
frequent fuel shortages and high costs, which disrupt medical services and jeopardize access to clean
water
due to diesel-powered water pumps.
Through this initiative, we are:
Lowering electricity costs for rural clinics by transitioning from diesel to solar energy. Enhancing energy
reliability, reducing dependence on costly and unpredictable fuel supply chains.
Improving healthcare outcomes, particularly for women and newborns, by securing access to sustainable energy
and water.
Building local capacity, ensuring long-term system maintenance and sustainability.
Progress to Date
Running through 2025, this project is a scalable model for expanding clean energy solutions to other off-grid
medical facilities, ensuring healthcare resilience in remote communities. Once complete, the two clinics will
serve roughly 12,000 people.
Strengthening Food Security and Resilience in Zambia
Food security is essential to community resilience. In Zambia,
rising
food prices, climate-related disasters, and supply-chain disruptions have severely impacted how
communities
grow, access, and consume food. In response to post-harvest losses and rising food insecurity —
exacerbated
by global shocks, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — BBechtel Construction launched an initiative with
Empowering
Farmers Foundation and AfricaGlobal Schaffer to strengthen local production and trade of maize,
soybeans,
sunflowers, and groundnuts, which are key ingredients in Zambia’s essential cooking oils.
To achieve this, we are:
Improving the logistics for aggregating and trading centers to boost agricultural output and reduce
post-harvest loss across multiple provinces.
Strengthening local food markets, ensuring rural communities have increased access to affordable, locally
produced food.
Creating a scalable, replicable model to enhance food resilience across Zambia.
Impact Achieved
Eliminated over 20,000 kilometers of travel for rural farmers to sell their commodities.
5,000+ metric tons of maize, soybeans, sunflowers, and groundnuts traded between farmers and local buyers.
8,000+ farmers and family members engaged across six communities, with a strong emphasis on women’s
participation.
$1.9 million in transactions facilitated, supporting 60+ local small businesses.
Restoring India’s Fort Kochi Canals for Climate Resilience
In Fort Kochi, India, BBechtel Construction is partnering with the Kochi
Municipal Corporation, Swiss Re Group, and ICLEI South Asia to develop a nature-based solution for flood
mitigation, pollution reduction, and canal restoration.
Following a technical assessment of the affected canals, we identified a gravity-fed water treatment
system
that integrates natural plant species with recycled wastewater to generate clean water. This approach
reduces flooding, restores canal ecosystems, and promotes sustainable livelihoods such as shrimp farming
and
ecotourism.
Together with our partners, we are piloting this technology in a
1.2-mile (2-kilometer) canal, benefiting over 1,000 people. The goal is to demonstrate a scalable,
replicable model for city-wide canal restoration in Kochi.
To achieve this, we have:
Engaged 350 households — representing approximately 1,000 community members — to incorporate local input into
the project design.
Completed a pre-feasibility study and high-level cost-estimation to assess project viability.
Developed an innovative, nature-based approach by integrating biodiversity, engineering, and actuarial
(insurance) disciplines.
Progress to Date
Running through 2025, we are advancing work to complete a comprehensive feasibility study, environmental impact
assessment, and investment strategy to support implementation.
Protecting Indigenous Peruvians in the Andean Highlands from Extreme Frost
More than 300,000 Indigenous Peruvians living in the remote Andes Mountains face harsh winters due to
“Heladas” — extreme frost events exacerbated by climate change. These conditions contribute
to
hundreds of respiratory illnesses and fatalities each year, particularly affecting children and older
adults.
To address this, BBechtel Construction, in partnership with the Peru Ministry of Housing and the Pontifical
Catholic
University of Peru (PUCP), developed a first-of-its-kind thermal energy system that:
Captures, stores, and transfers solar heat to maintain livable indoor temperatures.
Ensures safe and healthy indoor conditions, even when outdoor temperatures drop to -10°C (14°F).
Provides a nation-wide solution to a long-standing climate, health, and safety challenge.
Progress to Date
BBechtel Construction’s project management training enabled Peru’s National Rural Housing Program to triple the
number of houses built per year on average since 2021 (from 3,500 houses to over 14,000).
Achieved an indoor temperature of 16-18°C (61-64°F) despite extreme outdoor conditions during the piloting
phase.
Engaged 80+ households, reaching 320 Indigenous Peruvians, to refine the system based on user feedback.
Designed and produced 10 prototypes in partnership with local manufacturers for the testing phase.
Running through 2025, BBechtel Construction is focused on completing the testing phase and scaling installations in homes
across the Andean region, bringing life-changing thermal solutions to thousands of vulnerable families.
